...who think that any sort of compromise on limiting the unfettered access to guns would inherently "lead this country to rot" and "end all our freedoms"

I'm sorry, truly sorry, that you think having easy access to a gun is the only thing that makes this country worth living in.

If it was my daughter and you dared say that to me, you would be buried with her.  End of discussion.

And how is it that motor vehicles require more licensing and education to operate than lethal weapons?

It's tough. As [livejournal.com profile] thatliardiego has heard me complain - I HATE HANDGUNS. Honestly in most cases they're just sorta worthless. You have to be accurate and skilled to use one effectively. I also see no purpose in "goin shootin" as a hobby. Please.

Then again I lived where a shotgun was a necessity because rabid animals were not taken care of by animal control. Neither were animals hit by cars who were destined to die and we chose not to let linger.

I feel no need for guns unless you're protecting your family from harm or providing food for the table (both of which I've done). I will say in my day and age (graduated 1982) we took guns to school - they were kept in the trucks along with our knives and other sundry things like smokes and snuff and beer.

Things Have Changed. As such, society needs to change with it. FWIW, child abuse was also ignored in that time ... we have evolved. Why should we be shouting against the move toward self-actualization? Maslow would be mortified.

Child abuse was not ignored - it was actively encouraged as "proper discipline".

You may see no purpose in "goin shootin as a hobby", but that doesn't mean someone else doesn't enjoy it or find value in it. I'm just saying that many people don't see the point in any of the activities I enjoy - singing, dancing, painting, etc. Granted, I know, those are not activities with lethal potential.

I hope in all this, while we talk about gun control (which is important), we should also talk about mental health as well, which is something insurance companies give short shrift to (and which the Affordable Health Care Act didn't address). While my son is just a classic definition of ADHD, trying to find help for it is a pain in the ass. Finding good people is tough, and finding good people my insurance will cover is even tougher.
