Nick wasn't a regular attendee of the Maryland festival, but in little ways his influence and friendship has inspired many of its performers over the years. He was the author of "Hellship", performed by the Pyrates Royale on Lyve at First Night, and "Hot Meat" performed on rare occasion by me at gatherings of MDRF fans and once or twice the old cast talent show (never in front of patrons).

He also taught me to dance solo Morris jigs and helped greatly in the process of turning [livejournal.com profile] faireraven from a violinist into a fine fiddler. Either of those not there and there would have been no Cat & Fiddle Morris...

I fine member of the DC and international folk music community.  We will miss him greatly.

"You know Nick, this is an acquired taste."

"Yes son, it's one worth acquiring."

long season, long weekend, long day.  nice that traffic home (I didn't leave Annapolis 'til after 3) wasn't a problem...in fact, seemed insanely light.  Other direction sucked, of course, but nobody rubbernecked it on my end.

Note to everybody who doesn't know: the MDRF customer service booth knows all, even if they don't see it.  I had 2 3LF'ers miss out on Danse Macabre 'cause they didn't know where it was - the info booth Gerry's always know how to find us and pretty much any other act out there, thanks to all the handy-dandy schedules printed up.  Need to know? They'll know, unless the performer is out wandering street.  They're also among the nicest people on the whole site.

I would have tried harder to "be noticed" but logistics are hell - trying to get each area ready, walk the path once to make sure there weren't any surprises, get a water stop prepped, help get the jack-o-lanterns to the White Hart (sorry T O'K - didn't mean to interrupt but we was in a hurry), and all sort of other things, like say, getting changed for it, all added up to a very busy afternoon.

Parade was huge success, in spite of the missing people.  23 dead danced by the shops in the main food court and through the White Hart perfectly on time (granted, 'cause the Rogues somehow ended early, which never happens...I was told later it was 'cause they got griped at for running over on Saturday, but that's strictly rumor mill quality).  I went bouncy-bouncy during pub sing instead of sticking to my already occupied pole, so instead of one consistent viewpoint I got to see lots of things from lots of angles.  Even sat down at the royal table for a bit, which also never happens.  Weird feeling.  Not quite sure it's "me".  Probably not.

Saturday Morris rocked insanely well.  Our stick's echoes on the rain-conditioned boardwalk took 2 seconds to dissipate - we were louder than the guns on the joust field at that time slot for anybody hanging out back there.  Good crowds catching our more "white shoe" high-energy set.

Then there's the yellowjacket.

13 years and the little shits finally got me.

Also triggered my loudest audible expletive in 13 years, but at least I was in a pub and no kids were around.

Damn finger still itches. (updated - "damn thing still itches" was a little TOO vague)

More later.  Time to sort the garblaundry(tm) and get it started.

Yes, Cat & Fiddle Morris presents the "there's a ringing in [livejournal.com profile] thatliardiego 's ears that will never go away" show!

A full-strength side of Foggy Bottom Morris Men (counting me) will be performing during the Cat & Fiddle spots on Saturday.

We'll be poking holes in the boardwalk at 11:30 and up by the info booth at 2:30!

Some people are in such a rush to get out at the end of the night they really miss one of our more spectacular features...
acroyear: (schtoopid)
In spite of it now being October, so far the weather predictions for the weekend have us at once again high seventies, dry, and no rain between now and then.

Not that I ever actually see or know anything about the budgets at all, but hypothetically I would in no way be shocked if I were to see next year's budget have a huge line item for tons of sand to be brought in to replace that which we've all collectively snorted and carved out of our noses over the last 6 weeks.

"The crowds were curious...but well behaved."

(for the most part)

strange weekend, mostly in that generally it was perfectly normal, like a Perfectly Normal Beast (none of which were harmed by that chef guy over at the Hengrave Hall kitchens  on Saturday - though many other creatures were).

On the *really* good side, my knee didn't pop all weekend, nor has it popped going down stairs at home.  So I'm going to keep resting it and keep an eye on it, but maybe Thursday I'll try dancing again.  Maybe.
acroyear: (cat and fiddle 1)
..will be down on the boardwalk (across from the Fortune Teller booth) at 5:10pm, following the sword fight between messers Sledge and Spike (a fun show, feel free to come early to see it at 5).
acroyear: (sick)
My knee problem got its diagnosis: nothing serious, but it'll take time.  It's just a pulled ligament, so (if I take care of it), nothing permanent and nothing torn, and as I've said to many, it doesn't hurt (if I tore it, it would be hurting).  It just "clicks", especially walking down stairs or (yes, [livejournal.com profile] thatliardiego you can laugh now) most Morris dance steps.  Cartilage is fine, as is the bone itself - xrays showed no damage at all.  The ligament is one of the ones holding the kneecap in the right place: if i keep abusing it, it *will* get worse to the point of hurting.

So a knee brace from CVS, keep a cane or walking stick handy (rat puck - not hard to do @ faire), and IB if it does hurt on occasion and just take it easy with occasional ice packs is all I can do...and heat pads and stretches *before* I go, if I do feel like giving a dance a try.  I need to do a couple of experiments to see if there's any tradition that won't irritate it - I'm pretty sure we can still do bacca pipes if [livejournal.com profile] faireraven doesn't go too fast for the finale...

*sigh*

3 weeks of pretty much just head-banging, minimum.  I'll probably need a new tambourine after this.  Maybe it's time to start looking at adding some songs into the setlist...

Note: I *can* still do Playfords (they're just walking steps) so Danse Macabre practices WILL still go on starting next week.

I hate getting old...

Now these were all taken on cheap-ass kodak disposables, so they're not nearly as high quality as the more recent digital shots.  Hey, I just wanted souvenirs, not art...

Shots from 2000 are mostly Otter meet-n-greets and 4 from the cast party.

Shots from 2001
are pub sing shots including Mia belly-dancing and Rex the Pirate (getting hit by water from Zach), plus the wenching/roguing of Josie and (then still) Tyma.

For those not wanting to go more than 2 pages back in their f-list, I have photos up from 2007 (last Sunday) and 2005.

Mostly MacBeth and Fight School Reloaded...We're not even sure which of us took them. :)

From our annual day in danes.  Pictures include highlights from Chess Match, Cromwell's Disgrace, and various sundry characters about the place, along with a few nice atmospherics.  About 100 came out from the 400 or so that we shot...

Highlights:

Cast: feel free to let other cast members know they're here.  Many were interested in seeing them.
acroyear: (surprising)
Google maps has updated the satellite shots of Crownsville, MD, and the shots were apparently taken in the winter time: all the trees are just sticks and shadows and so its much easier to see the buildings of the site than in past shots where most of it was just bushy green trees.

of course, it also makes the site seem much dirtier than we know it is, but that may just have been taken right after a rain storm or something...

why september 22/23 has so completely escaped my mind?

for some reason i kept holding on to sep 29/30 as adventurers weekend in my head and not the 22/23rd even though i was pretty sure there was only one weekend in between the special event weekends.

*sigh*

it's almost like i *want* this season to end quickly.  i don't.  i just don't want to deal with tomorrow's 88 + humid days in the wool.  i'm already short-kilting it to keep my sanity intact.

side note: in digging through the accessories bin to find my scottish kilt pin crap, i found my clip clock!
acroyear: (cat and fiddle 1)
As noted elsewhere, we're (well, she, with my moral support and guidance (yeah, like that's worth anything)) performing with the local Scottish Country Dancers this weekend, making for a busy day (lunch can't even begin until 2:30).
  • 10-11: morning dance @ the info booth and may pole
  • 1130: boardwalk.  we may socialize with the rat puckers but can't stay long
    • 1215: we're practicing with the Scottish dancers backstage
  • 1pm: Kenwood lane from the Bullseye II booth down to the herbalists.  We can't go much further in one direction due to E Musicki amplified at the Market, and can't go too far the other direction due to the Rogues at the White Hart (yeah, Rock and a Hard place, *literally*).  We'll probably wonder up and down a bit.  No dancing due to the rocks but we may have some new tunes to play (well, practice ;-) ).
  • 2pm: Playing for Scottish Country Dance at the Market and being grateful it's not "stage in the middle of nowhere" it was the last time we played it years ago.
  • 4pm: same thing (so yeah, lunch can fit in there somewhere)
  • 5pm: boardwalk, usually up by the Fortune Tellers booth.
  • 530: I'll be at the white hart socializing and prepping for pub sing.  there's been a "me" shaped hole in one column for weeks that needs filling.
Our shows will be our the "Scottish" set - I'll be all kilted up.  I won't know if i'm doing full-effect or short kilt until thursday when we'll have a better prediction of the weather.  Dances will include Fling and Sword and our unique "Strathspey and Reel for One".

This is the third labor day weekend in a row that I can recall where *everybody* had a damn camera, usually really big ones with huge lenses and all that flash-control crap on it.  Some of them even used real film (oooooohhhh....)!

Is this some kind of club?  Is there a place online where all of these pictures end up?
acroyear: (beers and bells)
How the hell is one supposed to limp when the pain is in the right shin and the left calf at the same time?
acroyear: (beers and bells)
...I usually have the "oh, they're not there anymore" reaction to seeing old cast people and performers.

But instead, watching Ben Howard's footage from 1997 (the "official" Day in Revel Grove commemorative video released in '98), I'm more amazed at the constants, at who's still there.

There's a lot of people doing different things than they are now, but so many people there are still around, 10 years later, that I don't feel quite as isolated as I did last year when looking back and seeing only faces no longer around.
