Thoughts:

Why was Toy Story 3 on the list for "adapted" screenplay - I can't recall them actually publishing the work prior to starting the movie, which I thought was the distinction between that and "original"...

Tron snubbed for best effects?  Was Iron Man 2 really better, or did the Academy just not "get" why Clu looked the way he did?

Tangled snubbed for Best Animated?  And why only 3 nods this year instead of 5?

Alice would probably be the frontrunner for best effects if Inception didn't have so much hype around it.  Odd that aside from Inception, there isn't the big match-up where the visual effects also rule the sound categories (and odd that no animated films got sound design).  I don't expect Harry to get it, though 7.2 probably will get some attention unless Pirates 4 really has something special.

Day and Night I hope gets short animated.  Pixar hasn't won since For the Birds as the Acadamy has voted "artsy" for most of the last decade, though Day and Night is Pixar's most artistic statement for a short in quite some time.  It's also just plain fun.

The one I'm disappointed at not getting a "Best Animated" nod is Summer Wars, which Funimation Entertainment submitted for consideration. It was glorious, especially the animation.

(By the way--apparently, there were under sixteen submissions of animated films for consideration this year, so only three nominees. Had there been sixteen or more submissions, there would have been five nominees.)

I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet, tho I do have the Blu-Ray on my Amazon wish list.

BTW, I highly recommend Hosada's previous film, "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", if you haven't seen it already.

Yeah, I saw it--same place I saw Summer Wars, actually, the IFC Center on Sixth Avenue. (I love living in New York.)

I actually liked Summer Wars a lot more than Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I thought the story gelled better, and didn't have a problem of story context the way Girl did (it was a semisequel to an older story).

According to Acadamy rules, all sequels are considered adapted screenplays.

As for why three nominees for Best Animated, it is based on how many films were submitted. Last year was only the second time 5 films were nominated since the category was created.

I have little complaints about the nominees, with what is generally considered the top 2 domestic animated films of last year and Chomet's first film after making "The Triplets Of Belleview". Part of me wanted to see a nomination for "Summer Wars", but I knew that wasn't likely.

I'd also like to see Day And Night win. It was pretty nifty.

i admit i haven't seen Tangled.

but i would not be sad IN THE LEAST if How To Train Your Dragon won for Best Animated. :D :D :D :D :D

totally don't understand why Iron Man 2 got nominated for effects over Tron though. it was a good movie, but yeah, Tron was fan-frickin-out-of-your-seat-amazing-blow-your-mind-tastic effects. Iron Man 2 was another superhero movie with good effects in it.
