I decided to take a little sanity break, get off my arse, and go hiking. Went across the river to the C&O Canal National Historical Park to see what Great Falls looks like from the Maryland side. Not bad, but not as nice as the Virginia.

However, the canals and other rocky formations can be quite beautiful, especially at sunset. Unfortunately, the haze kinda kept the rocks from getting as nice as they could have been, but still. All of this was done on my little point & click Kodak M863. I might go back with the "good" camera (the Canon XTI) later, but I wanted to familiarize myself with the area first.

I really like Olmstead Island but you're right, the view of the falls is much better from the VA side. The Billy Goat trail is kinda fun and has some nice views.

I definitely remember that hill. Me and Dave did the billy goat that way a couple of Thanksgivings ago. Killed my ankles from smacking them up against the rocks.

ah, you went further south than i did. i continued down the canal side once under the house-bridge, then took the short-cut across (on the other side it's labeled "emergency exit" :) ) and cut back north to the first entrance from there. was in a hurry watching the sun to try to get back to the falls before it was too low. had i not, i'd not have gotten that reflected sunset in the water shot which i'm quite happy with.

oooh, nice! Dave and I didn't get to Olmsted Island. We parked at Angler's Inn and hiked up to like the B part and then cut back. I think part of the trail was closed due to flooding at the time and we were pretty beat. There's like a mile of nothing but up and down rocks. That really sucks if you have short legs like me.
