Flexitarianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
In 2003, the American Dialect Society voted flexitarian as the year's most useful word and defined it as "a vegetarian who occasionally eats meat".
In 2009, [livejournal.com profile] acroyear70 voted flexitarian as the world's most pointless word and defined it as "anyone who would rather work hard to label what they are rather than just choose to be what they are".

Depends on what the convictions are. I lean away from meat, but that's not because of any sadness about the poor fuzzy animals. I'm trying to eat less meat both for health and environmental reasons, and if I were actually /cooking/ meat (which I don't - I don't particularly know how to cook unprocessed meat) I'd probably try to shy away from factory farmed stuff.

I have at least one friend I very much respect who is all but vegetarian but won't shun a pizza with some pepperoni on it, and has no problem buying meat containing things for other people.

And I know several vegetarians who will cook meat for their spouses. One of them will eat meat at her spouse's family reunion, once a year. (Which likely keeps her from getting sick from accidental meat).
