Article Six of the United States Constitution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.
You know, I would love it when an openly gay person is elected to Congress or even President, that he swear his oath on a copy of the Washington Blade.

One of my favorite movie jokes ever is in Airplane II (one if its few REALLY funny ones, if damn subtle).  At the trial, the bailiff holds this heavy 3" thick book to the jive dude and goes "Do you swear on the Constitution of the United States to tell the truth ...".

But swearing on The Word of God isn't a religious test, it isn't like we are requiring the President-Elect to recite the books of the bible in order or the 10 Commandments which would count as a religious test. Since we are "One Nation Under God" and "In God We Trust" we know that God is the center of Our Country and we shall acknowledge His Power in our day-to-day lives.

Or so would say some of the people.

Even calling it "The Word of God" is a Religious statement.

No Quaker would use it or swear on a bible (nor would they use "oath" or "swear" - Franklin and the other Pennsylvania delegates inserted affirm because of the high Quaker population in their state).

The point is that by assuming he's not the President because he didn't use a Bible IS ipso facto a Religious test.

Oh I thoroughly agree and it ticks me off that the nutjobs are trying to say he isn't 'really' the president because of that. But they would see it as the end of the world if we were to revert the pledge to the version prior to McCarthy or change the rules so that "In God We Trust" isn't required to be on money (or better yet, change it so that it can't be on money).

I'm sure that since he thanked the different people performing on Sunday (even the GMCW) and mentioned Hindu and non-believers in the speech the idiots have their panties in a serious wad. I hope they get chaffed but I'm not feeling very sympathetic towards the nutjobs at the moment.

the issue is that The Supreme Court has this RIDICULOUS concept of Secular Religion.

Why oh why do they let stupid people outside into society?

*sigh*

I saw this story and mourned for America.

It's interesting to note that, when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of office on a Roman Catholic missal, because there wasn't a Bible available at the time.
