"This film contains depictions of tobacco consumption" - on the current trailer for Incredible Hulk.

Several years ago, K and I saw a Joe Banno production of Romeo and Juliet at the Folger which featured the warning "There will be gunfire and smoking on stage."

I guess that's better than the mandatory "R" rating that the phony Dartmouth study ended up recommending to Congress.

you really don't want to know what I think about that, trust me.

Arthur C Clarke's Ghost of the Grand Banks comes to mind. (http://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Grand-Banks-Arthur-Clarke/dp/0553293877)

In his description of the 2012 future, one of the minor mentions in the book is how there is an entire set of technology used to erase the smoking out of old movies. Smoking has become such a stigma, such a hated thing, that every bit of evidence that smoking ever existed has been methodically erased from the public eye.

We don't seem to far off now.

what do you mean "now"?

In animation, it's already been done: the Pecos Bill segments of Disney's Melody Time have already excised out his cigar that he had for most of the film.

fortunately, they didn't do that with 101 - instead they took footage of Cruella and made an opening "smoking sucks" commercial out of it.

Right now... (for what I mean by 'now') it isn't everything. The sentiment is there, but it hasn't spread to *everything*. They haven't started digitally editing classic black and white movies, or removing the word 'smoking' from books. ::sighs:: Although I was unaware that Disney had done something like that.

But if the movie/tv industry (which can be blamed for all smoking in the 20th century) doesn't hammer home the message that smoking is bad, that heroes shouldn't smoke, then who will? The parents?

What would the scenes in the Quiet Man be if you didn't get to count how many times John Wayne lights up, takes a puff and dramatically flicks it away? What about the end of Now Voyager when Jerry lights two cigarettes and hands one to Charlotte? Ugh. It just infuriates me to even think about the fact that someone out there is thinking about destroying someone else's art just because there is reference to tobacco use. Grrrr. Some people need to be smacked soundly about the head and shoulders.

Oo, I liked the one I saw the other night. Basic topic - this new fridge is so great, you'll have to work out a way of getting rid of your old one.

Three vignettes. Fridge on train tracks. Woman on stage magicking away fridge in puff of smoke. Fridge on cliff being hit by wrecking ball.

In the first and last one, a warning at the bottom said `DO NOT ATTEMPT'.

Apparently, magic is okay!

Wonderful.
