MOM: can you get me the iced tea pitcher?
ME: why? you still have tea in your glass.
MOM: but it's half empty!
ME: see, that's your problem. why is your glass half empty? isn't it half full of tea? don't you still have half a glass of tea, in which case, you shouldn't need MORE tea until you're done with the tea you have?
MOM: but it is half GONE. i need more tea to fill it so i can have a whole glass and take it to the living room with me.
(discussion about half empty vs. half full ensues... grandma walks in not even realizing what we are actually discussing is philosophy)
GRANDMA: what's the problem? just put more ice in the glass!
