Every time somebody says to me, "hey, can you bring some cd's along to a party" I keep thinking "geeze, not again...dammit, I don't have any party music...".

So I dig through the collection. The key stuff to look for is early-to-mid 80s, mostly "new wave".

Lemme see here.

Duran Duran, Big Country, Dexy, Roxy Music, King Crimson '81, Tears for Fears, A-Ha, U2, Simple Minds, Depeche Mode, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, The Police, Chris De Burgh, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Psychedelic Furs, Planet P, The Cars, Nik Kershaw, Dream Acadamy, Madness, The Motels, Naked Eyes, Men at Work, Flock of Seagulls, 'Til Tuesday, Strange Advance, 10000 Maniacs, and The Cure.

Then there's my "totally 80s" cd set which includes Culture Club, Wang Chung, The Escape Club, Kajagoogoo, John Waite, The Romantics, Nena, and Mr. Mister.

Then there's the arena-rock and pop-80s mix in all that, including Journey, REO, GTR, [Jefferson] Starship, Queensryche, Foreigner, Asia, Rush, Hall & Oats, Paul Simon, Yes, Billy Joel, The Who, String, Quarterflash, and Queen...oh, and on totally 80s: Buster Poindexter, The Bangles, the late Robert Palmer, Katrina and the Waves, Rick Springfield, Glenn Frey, J. Geils Band, Stray Cats, Eddy Grant, Laura Branigan, Tommy Tutone, Corey Hart, and Mike & the Mechanics...

...crap, I didn't even put a Genesis/Phil Collins hit in there...

I really need to make some pop-only cdroms for this sort of thing. Right now, if I bring all that, I'm looking at 4 boxes worth...

oh, and just found 2 80s CD's in cyd's collection, hits from 84 and 86, including Kenny Loggins, Eddie Money, Huey Lewis, Bananarama, Survivor, The Bangles, Wham!, and Tina Turner...

The World Is My Oyster. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

Former professional deejay that I am, I could put together a party with that selection.

My rule would be, however, to Just Stand Aside when all the white folk start dancing. That was an ugly era for boogie-ing...

When at my orientation, an overnight trip to JMU, they had a dance held in what I would later find would be my fav on-campus lunch joint.

This dance was dead. Period. The guy knew nothing about the crowd at all, and kept playing lots of mid-80s hiphop to a completely white audience right as Hysteria was hitting its stride. I basically came up and said fuck this. Dug into the guys CDs, pulled out five, put them in order, and said "this shit ain't workin'. You play these 5, in this order, you know which songs i mean, and you got yourself a night."

Ended up being the most popular dance of the entire summer's set of orientations. Just by going "man, put on some real stuff", I salvaged a night into a good experience for a LOT of people.

I'm still just amatuer DJ, but somehow i gotta come up with a party with all that tomorrow nite (Dante's wedding reception).

Now I gotta figure out how to take my stereo apart to get it over to the site...

Come over and raid Ike's collection....

Whohooo! A man with a bigger CD collection than I have!!!! I'm up to about a thousand now. What's your collection up to these days?

How do you store all those buggers? I have modified book cases. I made extra shelves so that I can shove six layers into half-height book shelves. That fills two, plus an extra.

In terms of size, I suspect that you hands down on both the pop and the folk counts. I have chance at having larger musical and indie rock sections. If pressed, I'll claim the largest Twee Pop colleciton.

Well over 2K, possibly over 3K at this point. Things kinda exploded when groups like King Crimson and Marillion began putting out live shows from their 20-30 year archives, so e.g., my Crimson collection tripled in size in the last 3 years. I remain a collector when it comes to the celtic or prog stuff; I find something I like and maybe the other CDs by the same artist are as good (or even better). The last 2 years saw my Steve Hackett collection jump from 2 to 20, and I still need about 10 more to finish it, but that'll have to wait 'til I get a new job...The pop collection is just what I described in the post that started this, with a few other class-rock collections like the Alice Cooper and CSN boxed sets, the pink floyd, a little clapton and bowie (live albums). The folk collection is, naturally, huge, mostly built up in the 90s. One rack of 90 cds is all scottish (and there's more that don't fit), another rack of 90 is all Irish, then I have separate boxes or racks for the Cape Breton, English, and Breton stuff, plus Scottish Rock (Big Country, who also have released a LOT of live concerts in the last few years since Stewart's death, and Runrig).

The CDs are mostly in real CD racks, up against the wall behind the bar. There are a few actually in shoe boxes or other boxes, set sideways; with those I covered their sides and top with wood-patterned and colored wallpaper to keep the wood theme going. There's still a large chunck of lesser used ones (soundtracks and 80s new age) that don't have proper homes yet.

The DVD and VHS collections, on the other hand, are the obnoxious ones. Right now, they're in those metal grid-cube thingies. The trouble with most of the DVD racks out there is that they just simply are NOT cat-proof for my cats, who like to climb things. They ignore Newton rather consistently, so I ignore Newton to my loss. Hence, I can't use any store-bought DVD rack.

The scary part is that that bunch you had stolen a couple years back was several times larger than my whole collection ever has been.

I'm still in awe of your collection and vast (*good*) taste in music.

And you really should consider taking that DJ thing seriously... not a bad from home part-time gig, if you can figure it out. Not every even requires an extreme DJ set up, after all.
