I'm not the only one that thinks so...

Pooflingers Anonymous: Lemon Juice:
A couple days ago I picked up the only magazine in the rack at work that I hadn't yet read, and it got me thinking. The magazine was one of those hunting/fishing ones that seem to be so common around here, and contained a short blurb about states with "no hunting on Sunday" laws. I have to admit I wasn't a bit shocked when the only reasons given to excuse the existence of said laws were religious reasons.

This began a cascade of thoughts about other Sunday laws in place throughout the country (such as local liquor stores not being allowed to operate... though the bars are allowed to be open in some counties here). I can't help but feel that it's time to take all Sunday laws to court and have them subjected to the lemon test. If there exist no solid reasons outside of religious ones as to why said laws exist in the first place, it's high time to have them removed from the books. I don't really care if the local religious population doesn't like people buying a bottle of rum on Sunday... it's not their right to legislate their Biblical edicts into my life, and no amount of argument from popularity can change that.

As a final thought, since I suppose it won't be hard for most readers to guess at the general demographic of states with "no Sunday hunting" laws, I wonder what would happen if we banded together to enact a "no NASCAR on Sunday" law in those same states...

I have no problems with people closing their businesses on Sunday or Monday or whatever day they hold sacred, but I've thought it ridiculous to legally mandate that people who want to open are legally not allowed to.

The general population in Georgia has been trying to get the no alcohol sales on Sunday laws changed for the entire time I have been here, the Govorner keeps vetoing the law changes.

One of the laws that I had to get reacquainted with after we moved was that stores cannot sell beer or wine until after noon on Sundays. You don't know how many times we've been in the grocery checkout line right before noon on Sunday, and get told that we have to leave the beer behind, or wander around the store for 7 more minutes before we can purchase it.
Seems we moved from one Nascar-loving state to another -- which is usually why we're trying to buy beer on Sunday -- to drink during the race.

Actually, Virginia has that law, or at least many counties do (if it's not a state-wide thing). They certainly had that in Harrisonburg 'cause I was often up at midnite on saturday when the grocery store locks 'em up.

If you really want to start something, ban the broadcast or watching live of football games on Sundays in those states.
