Today's AT40

Is another from Feb 1982. This takes place a couple of weeks after the one they played just a month ago. "Last Week" had Harden My Heart #3, I Can't Go For That #2, and Centerfold #1. I know Centerfold's not going to move, 'cause it stayed up there 'til well into Open Arms's time #2 (and here it hasn't gotten there yet) before finally being displaced by I Love Rock and Roll. What is surprising is how long the Hall and Oats track stayed up in #2 after falling to Centerfold, as if it really would have been #1 for longer if Centerfold hadn't been so huge.
At any rate, since there are only going to be about 10 songs different from that other post last month, I'm not going to go into too many details this time 'round.
There is going to be a bit more of the "80s sound" starting to form here, as the 4 debuts are all new to the countdown, like #40...
Hey you guys, TAKE OFF! by Bob and Doug McKenzie!
Beauty, 'eh? Decent singer, 'eh. Yeah, he's good. (It was Geddy Lee, from Rush. hey, 10 bucks is 10 bucks).
So much for not reminiscing...
---
Yup, more 80s stables making their first appearance, like Huey Louis and the News with Do You Believe in Love. The song was written by "Mutte Lange", famed producer of a number of heavy metal acts like Def Leopard and ACDC, though today more often producing Shania Twain. Go fig.
---
Wow. Dropped like a STONE: Waiting for a Girl Like You, having just ended its record setting 10 weeks @ number 2, is a mere 2 weeks later all the way down to #36!
---
Oh here's one I haven't heard since '82 - Quincy Jones & James Ingraham with the soul ballad "100 Ways".
---
A track with serious legs - the Chariots of Fire theme comes in at #34, but would end up #1 for a week almost 3 MONTHS later after I Love Rock and Roll did its time but before Ebony and Ivory hit the top. Probably winning the Oscar for best score might have been a reason for it staying up there.
---
I *still* don't get the Cliff Richard retro-ballad thing.
---
crap, snow's building up on the DirectTV dish (it's really wet and sticky - perfect snowball snow, about 3 inches here so far) so i'm losing the signal down here.
---
ok, we're back after digging out the driveway (4-5 inches, mostly WET and heavy)...
...and finding an AT40 rarity - the top 3 didn't change at all. Still Harden my heart, I can't go for that, and Centerfold.
see you next week.
