"Careless Whisper" is really George Michael's coming out song.  Its a farewell to the last woman he would ever sleep with, a woman who knew he was gay (or certainly could tell something was wrong in their nights together) but never openly said anything.

or it could mean he just couldn't dance without stepping all over her feet. and, after the physical therapy and 14 foot operations she had to undergo, he swore off dancing forever.

well, it was years later that he came out, and i'd stopped listening to pop music and more or less forgot about the song through all that time. it only came to mind 'cause it was playing on the radio in the cafeteria here and as i thought about the lyric, it all just clicked.
