Store credit for full price of the item.  Purchased an unopened one of the same.  No hassles at all.

Benefits out of this: mom still got the $10 gift card that came from getting the open box item  in the first place(she probably re-gifted that to a fellow teacher or something), and I got rewards-points for buying the replacement.

Good thing I got there when I did.  By the time I hit the front, the returns line was 3 times longer than it was when I walked in.

the real irony of all that? the model changed slightly between the one mom got and the one that's in the stores now.

The big change: the "default" plug is the one that fits my player. The new one doesn't actually need the adapter anymore.
