...is that in spite of saying they're doing it "for the artists", any moneys won from settling those suits (minus the legal fees) has no way of reconnecting to the specific artists who's material was "stolen".  Its not like they really have a "list" of what you copy or have any intention of trying to assemble such a list...

it is nothing but pure profit for the label and the artists continue to get shafted as they always have been.

Actually, many many millenia ago when I was a small-ish child and just learning music, we *did* have the sheet music. Howe'er, it wasn't until the late 80's that the RIAA (Ripoff Independent Artists Association) seemed to realize that 1000s of girl scouts were singing the song around campfires -- for free!! The usual lawsuit tactics and asshole-worthy claims of "protecting artists" were used; but for once people were offended and incensed enough to make them back off.

And thus ends our little tale. A true happy ending for a change. :-)

actually those lawsuits were "public performance" lawsuits by ASCAP, who is worse than the RIAA as far as that goes.

the RIAA only has grounds where *digital* music is concerned because of the DMCA. prior to that law, the RIAA's rights ended once the record was in your hand and only the performance laws (protected by ASCAP and BMI) applied.
