*sigh* she's getting old and fragile.  she cracked a tooth 2 weeks ago when trying a different food that ended up too hard for her, and possibly cracked her jaw in the process (well, she is a tiny little 6 pound thing).  so today she's in the vet to get the tooth removed and xrays to see if the jaw is broken or if its just an infection...

whah.

a dry food that's meant to be better for old kidneys, but i'm going to put her back on standard old-cat science diet and just keep an eye on things 'cause she didn't like it before it got her, found it too difficult to eat after, and lost even more weight when she was supposed to be putting some back on.

Eukanuba is just tougher than rocks, I swear. It doesn't even crunch the same on the floor when you step on the stray bits...

Don't know how their cat version is, but Sophie improved a great deal (for quite a while) when we put her on that Advanced Protection version of the Science Diet for older dogs.

Don't known what all is different between the regular and that, but she found more energy and her joints let up a lot for almost a year before she started the downhill dive again. Wish I'd started using it sooner.

Awww poor kitty. I hope she heals quickly.

How is she with canned food? I know that at least one of the kidney diets comes in a canned variety. Even if you don't go with a kidney diet, I would try to look for something low ash, lowish protein because I think those are the two things that stress the kidneys the most. Keep us informed.

she loves the canned food she loves, but is extremely finnicky about it. most of my attempts to change the food on her to slightly cheaper brands have failed. i do have a can sample of the pro-kidney stuf but haven't risked it yet.

at this point its more important for her to get back to eating at her normal rate and get some pounds back on as she's lost a full pound since april over all of this.

This was what we thought was the allergic reaction, by the way... The swelling went down a bit when we took her off the eukanuba and put her back on her old science diet, which is softer than the eukanuba... The swelling might just have gone down from not eating the harder food.

Thanks for the suggestion, though, it helped in getting things weeded out in terms of what was actually wrong.
