EphPod - iPod for Windows (and Linux) :: HOME:
EphPod is a full-featured, easy-to-use Windows application that connects with Apple's iPod. With a FireWire card and EphPod on a PC, it takes under 30 minutes to transfer 1,000 songs to an iPod. In addition, EphPod supports standard WinAmp (.M3U) playlists, includes powerful playlist creation features, and will synchronize an entire music collection with one click. It imports Microsoft Outlook contacts, in addition to allowing users to create and edit their own contacts. EphPod can also download the latest news, weather, e-books, and movie listings to an iPod.
Just bookmarking this for later.  The iPod is going to have to get a new home (its configured PC is dead) and I'd rather use another tool than run iTunes on the iPod with a new CPU forcing me to wipe the whole damn thing.

fuck legality - their entire practice (and iTunes's behaviour) is violating my rights of fair use.

there are plenty of things that can unload an iPod (playlists and all) for regeneration later. that's not the fucking point.

the point is that iTunes *makes* you do this (and go through these third party tools) *because* it forces you to erase your ipod anytime it thinks its on a "new" computer - they lock your box down to the cpu on the assumption that nobody changes that. that assumption is wrong: people change computers all the time (especially if you sync up at work).

i shouldn't have to go through all that bullshit and the 2 hours of my life it will waste. better to spend 10 minutes and find software i can use to keep iTunes out of it entirely from now on.

*and* keep my fair use rights to put anything on it and take anything off of it no matter what machine i'm on.
