Is it just me, or is Moussaoui just throwing a ton of shite out there for the media to print just to undo the carefully crafted version of the governments' case into chaos?
confess to A, confess to B, name drop a few others that had nothing to do with 9/11 at all (Richard Reid), and leave everybody so confused as to which story is true that the original confession becomes a powerless footnote.
like Hussein's "trial" in Iraq, its sometimes better if you just don't give some people the megaphone.

Date: 2006-03-28 07:02 pm (UTC)the jury can't execute him for perjury. they can only execute him IF the government has presented its version/interpretation of the facts correctly and that his defense has not successfully presented a case where the facts are either not what the government said they were, or not as bad as the government wants the jury to believe they are.
he is engaging in a kind of "double-talk". [the following i posted on another thread]
he's lying in order to confuse the judge and jury (and the media, where its succeeding).
the whole crux of the government's case is based on the facts agreed upon collectively in the congressional 9/11 report, which asserted that there were only ever planned to be 4 planes, 5 people on each, where Moussaoui's run-in with the FBI 3 weeks earlier effectively took him off the mission as a risk.
by asserting that there were 5 planes, and that Reid (who in no way at all has ever been connected with any al qaeda cell operating in the united states) was involved as well, he is acting to undermine the facts of the case and create a legal situation where even the guilty verdict based on the original confession may be overturned.
If believed at all, he also creates the situation where they *can't* kill him because theoretically he could have the names of the others that were supposedly to be on that fifth plane.
Al Qaeda trains its people to lie in order to add to the confusion. Its standard technique for that type of warfare, as anybody who's researched the French Underground of WW2 could tell.
For what its worth, Reid is just a nutball. He likely acted alone because he was considered too variable to be trusted in a real Al Qaeda operation. Moussaoui, as well as the vast majority of the network, had never heard of him until he got caught. It was a name of convenience, yanked from the media, and he just as easily could have named the 4 men involved in the London bombings and gotten the same effect.
