Stand proud Bode, stand proud. This is Dave Ross. (March 1, 2006)

He was billed as a phenom. The bad boy of downhill racing. But Bode Miller didn’t win a SINGLE medal at Torino and now everyone’s razzing him for it.

From now on, anyone who talks big, but can’t follow through will be said to have “Pulled a Bode.”

Like Dubai -- first buying those ports, now saying oh, we’ll put it off for 45 days. Nice way to “pull a Bode,” Dubai!

And yet, in my book, Bode is still a legend.

Remember – the Olympics is about role models for our youth.

Our youth are supposed to watch the inspiring stories of these athletes, and come away feeling... like INSPIRED youth.

Sasha Cohen hanhing on through her long program despite falling. Shani Davis breaking the color barrier in speed skating, paving the way for a generation of young African-American males to shun dreams of basketball and strap on skates. And of course, Apolo Ohno, who has inspired a generation of teens with soul patches to shun dreams of becoming 50s-style beatniks and...strap on skates.

But can the average person REALLY relate to athletes like this? Is the average person really going to make the kind of commitment it takes to stand on that podium?

Heck no!

Bode Miller speaks for the rest of us – the people who have a God-given talent but who refuse to succumb to it.

-- People whose most vivid memory of school is the teacher looking at us and just shaking her head in despair.

He proves that you can screw up and still get endorsements. So you stand proud Bode, stand proud. Heck, just stand! THAT we can relate to.
