When I was a senior in high school, one of the area schools attempted to ban Beloved by Toni Morrison. They claimed they didn't need to read the whole book; all they had to read was a single paragraph on a single page (the one that mentions copulation with cows). Never mind that the rest of the book had absolutely nothing to do with beastiality, nor the fact that, when taken in context, the practice was far from being encouraged.
(Of course, as an 18-year-old I found Beloved arm-chewingly boring and would have been glad if it had been banned, if only to save me from having to read it...)
