The Branagh / HP Connection Continues...
Oct. 26th, 2005 07:01 pmEvery Harry Potter movie so far has had some connection to Kenneth Branagh, starting with Robbie Coltrane (Falstaff in Henry V) in the first, Branagh himself in the second, and his ex-wife Emma Thompson in the third. Well, no co-star of Branagh's is featured in the fourth on screen...
...but Branagh's favorite composer, Patrick Doyle, has taken over the music chores from John Williams. He's kept some key themes like the main theme, but the variations to them are certainly quite original and fascinating.
It probably helps that Doyle is a little better at writing for lyrics than Williams is and that this film has a few "wizard rock" numbers for the ball. Just like the songs he wrote for Jedi, I could have done without Williams' setting of Shakespeare words to music in the 3rd film, though the other new themes in #3 are quite excellent.
It IS annoying in that the "kids" on the various potter fan sites out there are being too skeptical / cynical. Not being old enough to actually even SEE Branagh's Shakespeare films, they have no idea how strong and lyrical a composer Doyle is.
As a reminder, keep an eye on Barty Crouch, Jr. -- if you like him in that, you'll probably REALLY like the next season of Doctor Who, as he's the new Doctor (number 10)!
