I keep forgetting to post this, but i've noticed the flags around my office have been at half-mast for weeks, maybe months now.  Is there some presidential order to keep them that way, some 9/11 or war memorial, or are people just forgetting to raise them back up again?

Just strikes me as odd -- there's no honor in the rarity of a half-mast flag if its always at half-mast.

scratch that -- i did a new look around the office, and its only the one place (which i happen to pass regularly) that's still half-mast.  two others in eye-sight from my office are up at full.

not typical unless its a high-ranking officer (colonel or above). and again, the "honor" is lost when it always happens.

also, this administration doesn't really act to "honor" the war dead unless there's some level of opportunity behind it. they honor the dead on their own terms, not the dead's.

Doesn't mean that some maverick hasn't decided that he should leave the fl;ag down...

I suspect Reinquist was the cause and people still haven't reversed the trend. 30 days sounds familiar for a sitting judge (I have no idea WHY but...).

Of course, some people would say that it is for the country.

There is a flag code which indicates the proper treatment of the flag. Check out section 3, subsection (m) for the half-mast conditions and times. In particular, a Supreme Court Chief Justice gets 10 days.

Interesting point: when raising the flag to half mast, it is appropriate to raise it to the top, then lower it to half mast. Also, when half-masting on Memorial Day, raise it to full mast at noon.

Maybe a local soldier has died. I know they do that in my area.

Oh, when I was in the army they taught us it was half staff unless it was on a ship, then it's half mast. Yeah, sometimes I am that flippin' nit picky.
