Instead, it's a stealth housecleaning party -- Parental Independence Day, veiled by a smoke screen of hugs, back slaps and gifts of furniture for your new apartment.
Who set this arbitrary schedule for embarking on your adult life, anyway? Take your time. Graduation Day is an artificial excuse for action, like "Because I said so" or "Weapons of mass destruction."
Don't be afraid to dazzle your parents with your new, college-acquired advanced logic skills. Just watch what happens when you say, "Now I'm finally mature enough to make my own decisions (as you have recently told me so many times), so I've decided to live in your basement."
