Well, the clue "probably the most 3-dimensional character of any of the semi-regulars (appeared in at least one ep every season, usually more)" was a VERY big clue. Though his three-dimensionallity really didn't become clear until the later seasons. Before that, he was just the Carassian with a secret. A very similar character on Angel would be (can't think of his name) the green skinned night-club owner.
