Update: I note that they picked pretty good timing on it. Catch the college kids getting out of spring semester, but beat the fandom demand for the new Star Wars film at the end of May. The only other major fantasy / fandom film coming out is the 4th Harry Potter, and that's not 'til thanksgiving/christmas.

well, changes from what?

DNA has always said "screw continuity" between the various versions of the story. He very specifically wanted to play to the advantages of the new medium, just as he did with the TV show (like the visual style that became "the book" were all written in the script for the animation team to draw up), the records (changing the pace so it feels better on repeated listenings as opposed to having to get it all in one shot), and the infocom game (where the plot is a background thing and all the little 1 paragraph gags become major features of the game).

He knew exactly what a movie could achieve, and prior to his death he'd delivered a script that would in his view maximize the effect. He said that it was the first movie script (after 15 years of trying) that he was happy with.

The script is his. The new characters are his (including the role that John Malkovich is playing). The new situations that vary from the original radio show, records, book, or tv show are all his. The choice for director was his. He approved most of the director's ideas (including a black Ford) that he was alive for.

About the only thing he wouldn't have had an immediate hand in would be the look of the ships and Marvin and the specifics of how best to handle Zaphod's arm and head (the only instruction I recall was don't do what the TV show did).

I respect that like with Contact and Carl Sagan, this film represents what DNA wanted to achieve, and will view it as such. In fact, his family make cameo appearances according to the IMDB.

for adams at any rate. at least he's not as bad as Matsumoto's Harlock / Emeraldas / Galaxy Express 999. There is, basically, no relation whatsoever between the various incarnations of his characters. in fact, he's "killed off" one major character 3 times, differently each time.

Approved or not, there is still the issue of having things set in your mind because of how you imagined it while reading the book. It's not that I think this is a The-Directror-fragged-over-the-script-the-bastard-without-consulting-the-author, a la Starship Bloopers. It's just that to me, Marvin should be hulking and loom in a massively depressing way that the new one doesn't do for me. (At least so far.) And Zaphod should have two seperate heads and three arms... I recognize this is all my perception, tho. That's why I'm keeping an open mind. :>

well, the other trailer at the official web site does make the 3rd arm a little clearer, but the head approach is certainly unique (and eliminates some of the other gags like the covered bird cage with the other head going "polly wanna cracker" from the game).

I'm not worried.
