I once made a top-10 list of films greatly praised by the Acadamy (i.e., tons of Oscar nominations or wins, especially for best picture) that are nowadays completely forgotten as if they didn't exist. These are films that never make anybody's "fav film" lists, never get mentioned is subsequent Oscar ceremonies or movie reviews as being anything worth emulating, and never ever ever show up on television reruns, commercial or otherwise. This film topped the list, and yet today is finally remembered as IMDB's "movie of the day".

Mind you, I never saw it, don't ever plan to, and could care less, as i'd probably think the film stinks (the book doesn't look at that appealing to start with). But its the first I've seen anybody mention it since that year's Oscars were over...

Its possible to now stake your claim, if you bought a cd between 1995 and 2001, as a result of the RIAA's settlement for price-fixing. Cartel bad. Cartel got caught. People get money.

of course, the last part is: Cartel just take it out of performer royalties and blame consumer for being artist-unfriendly. but that's not official RIAA public policy.

part two, though -- if enough people file claims so that the total amount of the reward (the settlement, minus lawyers and handling fees, divided by number of claims) amounts to under $5, NOBODY gets the money and it all goes to charitable donations instead. so the situation results in a prisoners' dilemna situation, screwing everybody (except the lawyers) -- people want their take, but too many people and nobody gets anything.

from his (now more frequently updated) diary:

this may or may not work. but if any more of my time or attention has to go into this fucking joyless fucking exercise, better that we cancel it and all have easier fucking lives.

is my impatience and frustration conveyed in this letter?
