Well, my first chance to see King Crimson and I utterly fail to do so...Adrian Belew was sick ("wretched", they say). Now in normal circumstances they would have either canceled the show entirely, or put up a lesser version of the band, and fans would have been seriously disappointed.

Well, they did exactly that, and yet almost all of us were "damn that was a great show, in spite of it all".

ProjeKct Three came to play instead, consisting of Fripp, Gunn, Mastelotto. They improvised and extemporized their way through more than an hour (more than they said they'd play), gave everyone a refund for the missing crim show, and only charged $30 (instead of $50) for the night for those that stayed (which were most of us).

4 Crim tunes came out as part of it: variations on Level Five (minus the parts that Belew was key to, but the result was actually harder on the rest because it interfered with the measure counting they were used to doing), variations on Virtuous Circle (a track from Level Five that ended up not making the cut to the album), Deception of the Thrush (a track that so utterly resisted being captured in the studio that it remains solely a live piece), and an encore (yes, we were good enough to earn one) of Vrooom Vrooom (single-trio version, lots more space to listen into). There were about 5 or so improvs mixed in, including one that started built on Sustaynz from P2, but went in an entirely new direction as Gunn decided to play with his equipment a bit to find the right sounds to use.

Fripp can be rather touchy and sensitive in concert (he's VERY sensitive to audience recording and photography), but it seems that he rather enjoyed the night. They had after the encore a Q&A session that was a bit of a surprise...more of his usual philosophy talk came out in response to "why are you so shy" that i found rather amusing.

After hearing absolutely none of the new album...well, I still want it...and now having not had to pay for 3 tix, I might have some cash to afford it).
