Therefore, reasons Mr. Teachout (or so it seems), while experiencing reproduced paintings in, say, a deluxe coffee table book, or a play reproduced via DVD is a categorical no-no because experiencing reproduced paintings and recorded stage presentations cannot possibly equal the aesthetic experience of the live thing, with classical music, experiencing a reproduction (heard via an MP3 on a bloody iPod, no less!) is a perfectly acceptable substitute aesthetically for experiencing a live performance, especially when that live performance is by an orchestra that's something less than world-class.Yes, I have my reasons for not going to classical music concerts (1, they're too damn far away involving too much of a rush hour drive, and 2, my wife has no interest in them at all), but stilll I'm not out there saying that nobody should bother to go to them...
And this is a man who's a sitting member of the National Council on the Arts!

Date: 2010-06-15 07:42 pm (UTC)I never went to classical music concerts because I was always stuck playing in the ones in rural Kansas (we were the best orchestra in the area).
However, one of the main reasons I go to Maryland Renaissance Festival is not the beer (no really it isn't) or the people, but the music. Music heard live is just special IMHO.
btw - my orchestra was definitely less than "world class" but that didn't mean the heart and spirit and passion weren't in the music and while we weren't a paid orchestra, we were good enough to be asked to play other venues in other cities.
I can't believe such a snob would be a member of National Council on the Arts.
