The Islam aspect is borne of willful ignorance by most americans.
The Christian aspect is very much an intentional deception by the Religious Right, who stand the most to gain politically when the moderate Christians choose the label "Christian" over Reason. They've used this as the pull to get Catholics away from the Democratic party over the decades by using 1 issue for whom their views are in common as a means to make Catholics think they are in common on ALL issues of dogma. This from the same group evangelicals who call everything related to the Pope a form of idolatry (in this, i somewhat agree) but the Catholics, so bent over this one damned issue, totally are deceived by the two-faces of the evangelical right.
