well I am a "tree-hugger" and I think that Bush won't be happy until all natural forests are clear cut and the US turned into one giant bit of pavement.

I had sort of hoped that the serious problems with fires that we have had recently would have gotten people thinking (I know, I ask to much of the political types). *sigh*
When you do 'selective logging' generally the trees that are taken out are the ones that are worth the most $$$ and leave the 'trash' behind. Things that don't hold up well (but do burn hot and fast), things that are already dead and down (can smolder for hours), and change the entire eco-system. There is a lot of evidence that if the forests out west hadn't been opened to logging about a decade ago, the fires would have been easier to control and would have left more stuff standing (and then that was exacerbated by prohibiting the healthy burns that some areas want/need).
