Bachmann: No Government Control Over My Body! | TPMDC:
"That's why people need to continue to go to the town halls, continue to melt the phone lines of their liberal members of Congress," said Bachmann, "and let them know, under no certain circumstances will I give the government control over my body and my health care decisions."
I wish "the jokes just write themselves", but really these people have all just gotten too pitiful (-ly stupid) for that.

I can see the irony, but I can also appreciate that from the anti-abortion viewpoint, these are vastly different issues: from that point of view, abortion is murder and affects two bodies, not just one, so the government has the responsibility to protect the one without a voice.

Assuming of course you believe a parasitic clump of cells should have a voice, yes. But no everyone agrees with the wingnut take on it (including sections in the Bible).

But the real irony I think is if you look back to 2005 and the Schiavo case. There were Democrats that supported the government intervention there - including Barack Obama, then a senator ( though he later regretted it). But the ones that were most frothing in their demand that the government intervene to play save the celery were the "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, government out of my business" types of the Republican party and the bills past largely because Bill Frist, Rich Santorum and Mel Martinez were the only Senators present for it. 3 senators do not make a quorum.

In the House it was a different story, with a vote largely on party lines with 47 Democrats voting for it but with 174 Congressmen not even present for the vote.

Bush of course flew out from his (one of many) vacation to sign the thing into law at 1:11 am

Bachmann didn't get into power until 2007 so she didn't get in on that debacle but there's no doubt in my mind that had she been in Congress at the time she would have voted to intrude on this family's most personal of decisions.

What's really screwed up about all of it though that nobody has suggested that the government will stand between patient and doctor. If anything there are a dozen or more people RIGHT NOW between patient and doctor that can override things. Pharmaceutical reps, Insurance Actuaries, middle management and so forth and any one of them can cause Grandma not to get that triple bypass she needs. What is being considered is giving people the option of having another place to go - because companies that make a profit by collecting premiums but not providing treatment is sucking this country dry in a time when we can least afford it.

Of course the right wingnuts never let such trivialities like facts get in their way and reality has a known liberal bias.
