FDA To Regulate Tobacco | The Onion - America's Finest News Source:
The Senate passed a bill that would allow the Food and Drug Administration to regulate the sale of cigarettes and would prohibit the use of terms like "light" and "low tar" in packaging. What do you think?
With the (non-)obvious but brilliant reply:
"They can remove 'light' and 'low tar' from the labels, but as long as I choose the cigarette brand with the least rugged man in its advertising, I know I'm getting the equivalent."

I think there's a role for the FDA re: cigarettes. It's a product that gets ingested, more or less. They put stuff in it that would never be included in food, and which may be more of a factor in smoking deaths than the actual tobacco. Seems like theres a connection there.

True, but when the FDA tried to claim they had that authority under the FDCA a few years ago, the Supreme Court decided they didn't have it. Hence, new law.
