...why only the kids from the 60s could get away with memorializing their teenage summers in rock music 15-20 years later.
  • '65 Love Affair (Paul Davis)
  • Boys of Summer (Don Henley)
  • Summer of '69 (Bryan Adams)
  • Suddenly Last Summer (The Motels)
So where are the same summer memories in music for those in my generation who grew up in the 80s?

or were we too busy playing video games to get around to having memories worth romanticizing like that?

Bryan Adams was ten in 1969. He says he used that year because it made the meter better when writing the song.

Heh. My '80s memories feature mod bands like The Jam and Secret Affair. I don't think "Town Called Malice" really says it very well.

OTOH, some of the '60s bands I was listening to at the time (e.g., Small Faces) captured it all quite nicely. "Itchycoo Park," f'rinstance ...

They exist. Check out "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock (I know, I know--just look).

I dunno about the rest of them, but Bryan was 10 in the summer of '69. He was a little young for the events of the song....

also, i don't know what era Jack and Diane is supposed to be about, but i always associate it with my teenaged summer years visiting my dad in Nebraska and hanging out with my stepsister's high school friends there.

Personally, I think it's because that sentiment isn't tough enough. What passes for pop is full of gin and juice and bitches.

Cuz everything was cooler and more fun in the sixties, but we used up most of both the fun and the coolness :-P
