to summarize, what is lost is the right for individuals to preserve through duplication and distribution that which the "copyright holders" (i.e., corporations) deem isn't profitable enough to be willing to preserve at all. They hold onto things that are worthless to them because its not worth the money to digitally store and sell them because there aren't enough "customers" for that market, and yet they don't just release them into the public domain so that those rare few who do want to preserve them can do so.
