"The increase in premiums that middle-income families have seen over the past three years is actually larger than the four-year tax cut that they've been promised. This is an invisible tax increase on middle-class families." -- Tom Daschle, 1/20/04

Combine that with the tax increase from the states, caused by them doing annual property reassesments, continually increasing the "value" of our land (and thus the tax they collect), asssessments which used to only be done every 3 or 4 years, and we're definitely paying more per year than we were 3 years ago, with fewer services than before, and increasing that pay every year to the point that it may outpace the standard-of-living raises we get.

Add to that the continual encroachment of our civil rights by P.A.T.R.I.O.T. and its siblings, the selling off of our fair use rights and right of choice to the large media conglomerates, the degree to which our system is ignoring the problem of over-enforced technical IP protections limiting technical growth, and, lets face facts, the degree to which we were sent to war over a bold-faced lie, and you have the makings of a rather crappy state of the union, as far as my life is concerned.

Even up to 4 years ago, I used to call my political stance somewhere between "moderately apathetic" and "apathetically moderate".

Now, even just for myself and my wife, I can't afford to be apathetic anymore.

And that doesn't even take my future children's future...

all I can say is that I loved the fact that there was applause when GWB said, "The Patriot Act is scheduled to expire next year..." I was rolling in my chair with peals of laughter.

I plan on doing my own little "analysis" of the SotU address today when I get time, but I completely agree with you -- it was horrid and full of complete lies.

*standing ovation*

Yeah, i don't have to agree with my hubby on politics.

The fact that we do, is pure gravy.

The fact that he's finally stepping up to the plate and getting involved, priceless. :)

Love you, dear. :*

Cost of Living raise? What is that? I'm not at all sure that I am familiar with the term.

*sigh*

Trust me, you don't want to get me started on the shrub ... though I found the drinking games hilarious and scary at the same time. The truly frightening thing is that apparently the "let's continue the [shred what is left of the constitution Act" bit got more applause than the "it's expiring" part. And of course, under the new rules cheering the expiration of said Act probably counts as terrorism since you are disagreeing with [Shrub's Kingdom] by not wanting to extend the powers of the [Give HIS GOD OUR COUNTRY and Shrub unlimited power] Act(s).

best quote of the day, IMNSHO...

"I can't afford to be apathetic anymore."

[livejournal.com profile] thewhitedragon actually thanked me the other day for convincing him to register to vote a few years back. he said he is thankful that has a clear conscience because he did everything he could to prevent Bush from taking office.
