where the FUCK did this storm come from?  nothing all day, then we get on our way home from the annual party and pass through a tiny bit of rain, of the "big deal" type...

...only to discover that whatever the f' it was, it clobbered the shit out of a transformer, killing power from our house east well past cascades and north up cascades well past the costco and giant (2 and a half miles away).  not a single light nor stoplight that entire way.  nothing.  cops at every stoplight (and even then, plenty of idiots not doing the "treat as 4-way stop sign" thing).

so, well, mr weatherman: WHAT THE FUCK????

NOBODY said NOTHIN about no rain.  not even the slightest hint in this morning's forecast which was telling us that yesterday, today, and the next 3+ days would all be dry (and annoyingly hot).

so where the hell did this come from?

on the bright side, we thought about it and got ice to cool our freezer (and my wonderful steaks mentioned earlier) from a 7-11 that was lit, still open, and hadn't managed to sell it all.

on the brighter, we'd managed to quickly get it into the main freezer (which was still cold) in 10 seconds top, which should protect said steaks.

on the brightest side?  30 seconds later, our lights came back on.

I can't impersonate Gilbert Godfried close enough.  I just can't.

the weather channel said "chance of isolated thunderstorms" for this afternoon and tonight too, clearing after midnight. that's where it came from.

When it gets that hot and humid, there's always a chance of thunderstorms.

Especially when it's unusual compared to weather before it... we haven't even had many days in the low 80s yet... so suddenly jumping up into the high 90s ... wasn't surprising at all. It *was* a little amusing that the t-storm that had us holed up in Red Robin (go figure it came in just as we asked for the check) dumped so little water at our house that the pavement was dry under *all* of the trees.

Good to hear they got your lights on again so quickly... BGE seems to have trouble with that concept (and the people working at Red Robin were counting their lucky stars that the storm happened so late - even though it was a Saturday, it was the first day since Wednesday that they've not been over-run by people whose electric got knocked out by the storm and they were still keeping their fingers crossed that they wouldn't have an 8-something pm rush on the place).

We live on the same circuit as Cascades Parkway... That means that when the power goes out, they have to send cops out to monitor the traffic situation. The sooner they fix it, the sooner they can get the cops back to doing something more useful.

The few times we've lost power, they've gotten it back within four hours. They'd rather not have cops sitting on traffic lights when there are more hazardous situations to deal with.

What's funny is, I was living in Savannah up until about April of this past year, and on St. Patty's Day, a storm came through, knocked out a transformer, and left all of Savannah in pitch blackness. Turns out that the transformer that got hit served 4 counties. So most of Southeast GA was out of power for almost 5 hours.

In the middle of the biggest party of the year, no less.

The weather folks may not have seen it because the worst of the storm was EXTREMELY localized. As in, we got hailed on as we left Merriweather Post Pavilion (Capitol Jazz Fest), visibility was almost literally zero, but then we got to Baltimore and saw absolutely no signs of rain, even though half the sky was lit up with lightning for some time. Now we're back in Fairfax, and there's no sign of any recent storm.
