be careful with avg8 virus scan
Jun. 2nd, 2008 08:14 amit now knows how to look in detail in .tar and .tgz files (avg 7), and if it finds anything inside these (in my cases, old) unix files, IT WILL DELETE THE ENTIRE FUCKING TAR FILE, regardless of how important it might be.
And I mean DELETE. not just "virus vault".
Much of my archives of my time with my previous company are now GONE. Utterly Wiped, because of ONE file in ONE obscure mail folder: "trash" (meaning to my mind I'd already deleted it).
I am NOT fucking amused right now.

Date: 2008-06-02 02:03 pm (UTC)The program can be found on download.com - I'd highly recommend grabbing it and trying to pull the file off the drive. As long as it's not overwritten anywhere (which if this just happened shouldn't be a problem) it'll *potentially* restore the file. It's not often that I recommend a program, but this one I'm a big fan of.
BTW, the machines here at work? They were set up the same way only with McAfee's... I... ummm... corrected the 'faulty' registry key to move the files to a temp quarantine directory without file removal. Hey, if IT can access my computer and push file rights, program installations and registry modifications... well, I can go right back and 'correct' their screw-ups, right?
