Shades of R2D2 tucked in there, of course, but Pixar and WDI really seem to have done a damn good thing with this character and its realization.

Yes, I said WDI.  Imagineering.

Wall E is now real.

Watching the preview for the movie, you see the shades there too. It makes...evolutionary? sense, from a "create a cute robot for a movie" sense.
