The Raw Story | Huckabee: Amend Constitution to be in 'God's standards':
The United States Constitution never uses the word "God" or makes mention of any religion, drawing its sole authority from "We the People." However, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee thinks it's time to put an end to that.

"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."
Mind you, he's getting most of his support from many evangelical leaders who claim the Constitution already IS a "Christian Nation" document (nevermind that pesky business about no test and the first amendment and the fact that 8 out of 10 commandments violate the document if they were enacted as law), so once again we have this wonderful double-talk - one the one hand it already suits our needs if you interpret it our way, but on the other hand it needs to be changed.

This is, of course, exactly the same double-talk they use about the school science standards - on the one hand ID is pure science and there is a controversy that should be taught yada yada, yet on the other they talk about ID as the front-wedge for "getting God back into the public schools".

I almost wonder if Mike missed the memo going around (see David Barton's collection of misquotes and lies).  Kansas's history department has gotten a copy, as has Congress itself...

Hey man, pandering to the religious right got Bush elected twice. Christianity is on the rise after a whole generation was raised as godless heathens. Now they're getting older, have kids, facing retirement and wondering what purpose there is to life. Enter the non-denominational mega-churches and they get sucked in like space dust on the event horizon of a black hole.

Just read them. Only Murder and Steal and (if one takes it strictly and not just "shalt not lie") bearing false witness are laws we can enact.

No God's but me? violates Establishment. there were actually a lot of state-official churches (against Madison and Jefferson's intentions) until the 14th amendment.

Idol worship? violates freedom of religion.

Blasphemy? violates freedom of speech and the press.

Sabbath? if enacted as law, violates Establishment. Already the various "no booze sales on sunday" blue-laws are a violation only nobody's mounted a serious enough challenge to get rid of them. ANYTHING in law that restricts Sunday specifically is a violation of Establishment.

Honor Parents? unenforceable without violating rights to privacy. for the most part, undetectable.

Adultery? unenforceable without violating rights to privacy...not that they haven't tried over the centuries but most of those laws are unenforced or off the books because they know there will be a backlash.

Covet? The very foundation of modern economics! Everything works in America because of our "keeping up with the Jones's" attitude (including our politics itself these days). However, like with Honor Parents, any law attempting to enforce this would be unenforceable and because it's a freedom of thought issue, undetectable.

good clarifications.

i guess my home county in Jersey is in violation, too . . . we have an age-old blue law still in effect. no sales of anything on Sundays except food and necessities (ie, CVS, the supermarket, and restaurants) or else pay a hefty fine. they say it's to guarantee people a day off, but we all know it's an old christian forefathers of the town deal. kinda sucks for all the conservative and orthodox Jews living all throughout the county.

this huckabee guy scares me. i hope the rest of the country's voices can be loud enough to drown out the evangelicals.

You must be from Bergen County!

It's great fun when you forget about those rules just as you're pulling up to the Garden State Plaza or something. It's also great fun in NY when everyone from Bergen comes and invades your mall. :-)

Ah but if they change it, then they won't be violating it. There in is the rub.

Anyone but Huckabee! He's the last person in the running that I want as president.
