BBC NEWS | Europe | Kasparov seized by Russian police:
Russian police have detained opposition leader and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov.

He and other critics of President Vladimir Putin were arrested as police broke up a rally in Moscow organised by Mr Kasparov's Other Russia coalition.

Police moved in when protesters tried to march to the election commission, which had barred Other Russia candidates from next week's election.
Putin is about to do what no American has ever done: give Yakov Smirnoff a second chance at a career.

Seriously...single-party elections, arrests of non-violent dissidents?  This man is not our ally.  This man is a monster, as bad as any other "elected dictator for life".

Theoretically, Putin can't run again in March of 2008, but there is talk of him staying in the Russian Parliament where his influence over other Party people and the KGB could easily lead to a coup.
