Japan insists that their right to whaling and eating whale meat must be preserved because it is a part of their "cultural heritage".

Sorry, guys, but there are PLENTY of things that are part of a nation's "cultural heritage" that we can say belong in the past.  These include things like racism in America (especially in the South), antisemitism in Germany and Austria, caste-based repression in India, apartheid in South Africa, unrestricted logging in France and Brazil, ...

At a certain point, you have to look to some parts of your past and say, "NO MORE".  We don't need to "preserve" this heritage, we need to let it go and move forward.

This is one of those times, Japan.  Get over it.

Inuits have whale hunting as part of their cultural heritage and are allowed to hunt a small number of whales a year. I also believe that they hunt said whales with traditional spears and canoes, not rocket launched harpoons with explosive tips.

So I say give the whales a fighting chance and go out there in canoes with your spears!! Preserve your cultural heritage!!
