Dispatches from the Culture Wars: McCain: Exile Them!:
Is there anything funnier than watching politicians pander? They get going and they just can't stop themselves from saying something breathtakingly idiotic. Like this little gem from John McCain while speaking at a VFW hall about MoveOn.Org's criticism of Gen. Petraeus:
"It's disgraceful, it's got to be retracted and condemned by the Democrats and MoveOn.org ought to be thrown out of this country, my friends."
Why yes, John, that's a wonderful idea. A group says something you don't like, throw their 4 million members out of the country. An ordinary person would consider that to be tyrannical and a clear violation of the Constitution; the good folks at the VFW hall in Hudson, NH, actually applauded it. Very nice.
Once again, McCain shows he has no spine and will say whatever is needed to be said to win applause (and by extension, money) and votes. Were we really convinced he was better than Bush 8 years ago?

As far as I know, no one on the "mainstream" left or libertarian center has ever suggested that the right wing actually leave the country.  All we've asked is that the leaders of this administration be properly, legally charged with the crimes they have committed over the last 8 years, be it perjury, constitutional violations (many of a felony nature), and war crimes.

I've suggested it on numerous occasions. Not that it should be policy but as a counter to constant badgering by right wing morons who don't know their own rights or Constitution from an asshole.

To McCain I say: whether or not it is disgraceful or not is debatable. Whether or not they should be thrown out of the country is not. The Constitution grants us, universally, freedom of expression. Not just the people you happen to agree with, everybody. From the Al Frankens to the Fred Phelps and everybody in the middle. It isn't a complicated concept to understand, even for politicians. This is the way the founding document of this nation works - like it or not. Without it, we are not a nation, there is no President and none of this election crap matters. If you can't deal with that concept, John McCain, either lobby to remove the First Amendment so we can actively oppose you or fly your ass back to Baghdad and stay there.

I'm not too worried about McCain, his 'short bus express' has gone down the tubes ever since his blatant lies and hypocrisy have been revealed to the public.

The only one on the right that really worries me is Giuliani. He's got this urban legend built up around him that he's 'Americas Mayor' even though he did very little on 9/11 and even made things worse by his idiot policies. Why the HELL would you put your emergency services center in a building that has already been hit by terrorists? You wouldn't. Unless you're a self serving, power grabbing, Constitution ignoring hack like Rudy Giuliani.

The Dems will win this next election unless of course the Bush regime organizes a catastrophe and suspends the elections. With the Dems come their own set of problems and most of it stems from the fact that the common American will go back to sleep. Just because the other team's stepping up to bat doesn't mean we shouldn't watch them like hawks too. They're just as bad, just in a different direction.

I still think he is better than Bush, but that's not saying much for Bush.

It is amazing how quickly McCain has pissed away all the goodwill he earned from 2000, tho.

Greenspan's comments caught me off guard. He had respectful things to say about Clinton. I had gotten so used to the hardball smearing of the Right that I forgot that people across aisles could have respect for each other.

Naturally, Greenspan's already been called a senile kook.

I'm not sure who we need next. I'm just sure that I do not want the one party system that the Neo-Cons tried to arrange.

Does MoveOn.Org have 4 million members, or does the Democratic party have 4 million members? It sounds like he just wants MoveOn.org to leave the country. It's still a dumb thing to say, but if MoveOn has only, like, 12 people in the organization...

I have a point here, but I'm not sure how I'm trying to say it.

Also, what did MoveOn say, precisely? The only limit on freedom of speech that I can think of is clear and present danger. So unless they outright threatened someone and indicated they intended to make good on that threat - and I doubt that - then McCain shouldn't have said something stupid like that in response.

Still, it helps to know what the original context is.

I'm probably rambling right now.

P.S. All of your icons are beyond awesome. :)
