Some sappy pop song from the early 70s, I think by the Carpenters, has as it's chorus the main melody theme from Rachmaninov's 2nd Symphony, 3rd movement. However, my limited memory of the lyric (hey, i was 4 at the time and it doesn't get repeated all that often, even on XM's 70s channel) has me at a loss for exactly what song it was...
can anybody help?
Update: it was the 3rd movement, not the 4th. on my cd, movement 1 takes up 2 tracks and the track in question was track 4.
Update 2: they (the classical music group) found it.

Does it happen to be "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" by Eric Carmen? All-powerful Wikipedia says it's based on Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_popular_songs_based_on_classical_music

"Never Gonna Fall in Love Again"?? Are you sure? The Carpenters have a song called "I'll never fall in love again".... Hmmmm.... it's not on the two Carpenters cd's i can handily put my hands on, but that's ok. I see you are thinking this song is NOT by them, tho, yes? Gotcha.
The Carpenters were foundational in my learning to sing and in building a personal singing style. They and Streisand, actually.

Date: 2006-11-11 06:43 pm (UTC)Wikipedia definitely says the song is based on the symphony, and another song from the same album, "All By Myself", is based on a Rachmaninov piano concerto. Obviously, *somebody* was in a mood when they went to write for that album...

Date: 2006-11-11 04:36 pm (UTC)It's wonderful classical music opens the scene, and the two of them, in the most amusing of ways, sing a very simple song.....
"We'll be right back.... after we go to the bathroom!"
