Disney tips hat to Walt with new DVD series - Yahoo! News:
The Walt Disney Co. is launching a new DVD line honoring its famous founder.

The Walt Disney Legacy Collection will spotlight films from the Disney archives that the late Walt Disney personally had a hand in creating.

First up: The "True-Life Adventures" films, a series of 13 animal and nature movies that will be released on DVD December 5, the 105th anniversary of Disney's birth. The films were released between 1948 and 1960 and won a total of eight Academy Awards.

Disney reportedly got the idea for "True-Life Adventures" when he saw research footage of deer that had been prepared for "Bambi." The first film, "Seal Island," was snubbed by RKO -- at the time Disney's theatrical distributor -- and led Disney and brother Roy O. Disney to form their own distribution company, Buena Vista.
The same day sees the release of Pirates 2, btw.

In addition, this year's Walt Disney Treasures release features
  • Complete Pluto Volume 2
  • More Silly Symphonies
  • Your Host Walt Disney
  • The Hardy Boys (from the Mickey Mouse Club series)
all coming December 19th.

In the animated front, Robin Hood gets an upgrade from it's relatively un-special Gold Collection release, coming November 28th, and March's Platinum Edition is Peter Pan (yes, annoyingly, it's 3rd dvd release, just like Alice and Mary Poppins), likely to promote the new Tinker Bell movie coming next spring.

Plus, there's going to be a 4 disc "extended edition" Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe coming December 12th, featuring:
  • Disc 1: Extended motion picture with additional scenes and features
  • Disc 2: Two Worlds of Narnia featurettes
  • Disc 3: C.S. Lewis: Dreamer of Narnia - All-new feature-length film about the man who created Narnia
  • Disc 4: Visualizing The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: The Complete Production Experience
  • Collectible 10-page companion guide
  • Certificate of authenticity
  • $10 mail-in rebate for previous owners to upgrade
Yay for that last line 'cause, damn...still, amazon's listing it for only $27, so it's not a major "steal the money from the fans" type of release.

Except for the part where, unlike LotR, we weren't told that there was going to be a quick second release before the first one came out so that we could make informed buying decisions.

So?

If they were told, or at least hinted, then nobody would buy the single disc, and then the mgmt might think there wasn't a market for it and not bother.

Reselling extended dvds for Disney has ALWAYS been based on whether or not the "cheap" release sells.

Personally, I expected something like this, as Disney has shown an extensive history of back catalog "improved" re-issues more than any other studio ever, so I simply don't worry about it.

Besides, they released the first dvd on the cheap anyways, so at $30 for this, $15 for the other (if you knew where to buy it), plus the $10 rebate, gets the set for less than $40, far cheaper than the LoTR 2-disc + 4-disc set (not counting the recent REALLY cheap LoTR releases).

Usually Disney has the decency to wait a while instead of double-dipping us in the same year.

And weren't you the one grumbling that you had to buy the Star Wars DVDs twice? (Although there they did give more value than just some extra features.)

The Narnia release (so far) is not saying that it includes the theatrical release, so it is not a repeat.

for Star Wars, the discs included the 2004 special editions which therefore made it a repeat.

so yeah, i'm grumbling a little with Peter Pan, since they just released a one-disc special edition not too long ago. meanwhile, Disney is still sitting on a 2-disc Pinnochio that's made it to europe (though hints are that it'll be 2007's first release, but hints also say that Snow White and Beauty and the Beast may be getting ANOTHER platinum release each in the next 3 years *grr*).

just like i grumble about the new LoTR sets since I'd like to see the documentaries but don't want a crappier print of the movies to do so.

But the Narnia set is different, just as the original 4-disc LoTR sets were different from the 2-disc theatricals.

For us...

...as you can imagine, it's the 2-disc Lilo & Stitch that has been rumored since the original DVD came out in 2003. It's been available in Regions 2 & 4 for a while. It was supposed to be released at several dates this year in Region 1 but keeps getting pushed back. I've threatened to buy the Region 4 set from down under but I know as soon as I do, they'll finally get it released here in the states.

Yeah, I love my company!!! *grin*

YAY!

the new Tinker Bell movie coming next spring.
BOO. Man, I hate those artificial sequels. I mean, they could be revisiting Lloyd Alexander's series -- and trying to do it justice this time -- and instead they need to do a retcon like this?

I'm still waiting on the re-release of Song of the South. I have't seen it in... well, it's been along damned time since I listened to the 45 Storybook version I had.
