on a discussion of "Elaborate Mediocrity", someone mentioned the Mormon Temple, to which i clarified:
Re: The Mormon temple in Bethesda, MD - for those who don't travel the DC beltway on a daily/weekly basis, think the "Emerald City of Oz" peaking up 200 feet above the trees, with a golden Jesus at the top of the spire holding a golf club out and yelling "fore!" to the east, and you'll have it.

The traffic reporters still refer to one of the bridges over the beltway as the "Surrender Dorothy Bridge" (thanks to some now painted out letters a graffiti artist put there years ago).

I always call it the "Batman Temple."

I see it, and I think, "Orlando!" in reference to Cinderella's Castle there...

yeah, on the californian vacation (for a wedding up at disney) we saw it while driving down I-5 heading for the inner harbor and Anthony's Fish Grotto (I wanted a place where I could get a decent view of the carriers, since being 36 rather than 10, I can't use my dad as an excuse to go on base ;-) ).

i used to live in SD as a kid while dad was on the Connie.

i took [livejournal.com profile] faireraven down I-5 to the harbor, then down to chula vista where i grew up (and so i could show her where i lived and a few landmarks of personal nostalgia), then up to a quick drive-by balboa photo tour, then up I-15 to Stone Brewery on our way to San Bernadino. quite the whirlwind.

My favorite view of that bridge was the time that they painted over the letters fairly carefully in green that was just a little different shade than the green on the bridge so you could still read it (though not as blatant). This was when the Surrender sign went up every few months and got painted over a week or so later ... lather-rinse-repeat. The subtle "Surrender..." was up for quite awhile.

Now THAT is Cinderella's Castle.

Ours is fairly simple compared to the SD one.

See Jesus with the golf club? ;)

Seriously, I think it's supposed to be Gabriel blowing his horn, but I swear, it looks like he's playing golf.

Just look at the one in [livejournal.com profile] snipeyhead's response. THAT is Cinderella's Castle.

The Temple down the road from UCSD resembles the castle in the 5 lions version of Voltron. We used to refer to it as "Rockets to God."

And the Surrender Dorothy bridge currently has a sign on it, facing through the fence, that says, simply, IMPEACH HIM.

That "Surrender Dorothy" was there for over fifteen years, maybe twenty, before it got painted over.

The fun one was when it was painted on, and they sent guys out with a sand-blaster to scour off the letters. Well, the sand-blaster guys scoured off the letters. Just the letters. So they had "Surrender Dorothy" written on the bridge in bare metal! That lasted a while before they got the sand-blaster back out to clean off the entire panels.
