very depressing...
Aug. 16th, 2006 11:33 amlast year, the lot outside my window, once all woods, got stripped completely to make way for 2 large 4-story condos plus parking garages.
now the next lot over in the other direction is getting stripped down for the same thing.
why haven't they learned that trees that already exist and are tall and strong are better than new fruit trees that are only 7 feet tall and full of allergy-producing pollen...*sigh*

Date: 2006-08-16 04:00 pm (UTC)When my parents house was built, in the middle of the woods, they only cut out enough trees to put in the driveway, the septic field (which can't have trees growing over it, or the roots might damage the septic tank), and a little bit of back yard. That's it. For that matter, my parents finally had one or two trees taken out because the wildlife creatures were using said trees as a way to get in via the roof. But the rest of the trees were LEFT THERE. Even the newer houses going up in my parents area don't chop down all the trees, just the ones in the immediate vicinity of the foundation of the house. That's it. No more than necessary to build the new place.
So why is it that in VA they seem to have an absolute NEED to bowl over entire stands of trees for a small area of development?
They did it on Rt 28 when they didn't need to, and now everybody slows down and squints in the sunlight in the morning, because the trees are no longer there to shade the light. They have removed more trees in Ashburn than you can count, for the same reason. They removed all of those trees by your office for first one and now a second set of condos, but they replace them with far fewer trees than I would like, and all of those trees are the fruit variety that look pretty but will never grow to the size and sturdiness of the prior tree stand, which mean that the condos have no windbreak nor shield from the hot sun.
Why do they do this???
