After summarizing the last few incidents where Interpol only finds the names and core data on potential (or past) terrorists after that information has been published in the

All Terrorism Is Local, Too - New York Times:
No family should accept a situation where loved ones are killed by escaped foreign terrorists because their law enforcement agencies were not given the names, photographs and fingerprints of the escapees. Yet, while almost all developed countries have systems in place for sharing information on criminals and terrorists among their various police agencies, they do not have good systems requiring the sharing of information with Interpol or foreign police officials on a consistent basis.I'm starting to lean towards supporting Interpol in this as well, given the incompetance at the top of DHS and the dismantling of the CIA and the wrong focus of the NSA on our own people. Until this administration changes and competant people are put in charge of intelligence gathering and processing rather than Bush-Cheney cronies, I have no faith in this administration's ability to stop a cow from shitting. They'd probably arrest and torture the wrong cow...then wonder why the meat tastes so bad.
Likewise, local and state police forces around the world are increasingly being taught to enter the names, photographs and fingerprints of criminals and suspect individuals into national databases. But few local officers are told or trained to enter arrest information into already existing global databases.
Why? Some countries wrongly believe this is a matter of national, not international, concern; some are years behind in knowing what is possible; some still have the pre-9/11 mentality in which the primary focus is on after-attack investigations rather than pre-attack prevention. I understand these issues. But they can be addressed through education, clear protocols and steady monitoring. Unfortunately, Interpol isn’t in a position to require such cooperation. For this we need an organized and enforceable commitment from all our member countries.
The foiling of the terrorist plot in Britain clearly shows that in a globalized world, the arrests of terrorists across an ocean may be the only thing stopping them from appearing on your doorstep.

Date: 2006-08-13 04:35 pm (UTC)Why would they want to? You're neglecting the fact that we've not been attacked again since 11,Sept. 01. MANY attacks have been thwarted by U.S. and foreign authorities since then, not just the most recent, public one. A lot of someones are doing something right and the majority of them were appointed/hired/tasked by the current President and the "cronies" and "incompitants" so naively maligned.
"Torture" is not an effective means of information gathering, any third grader knows that. Dont believe everything you see on television!
Why would they? It's not their job! Such names are the charge of the F.B.I. and other alphabet soup agencies. Whoever wrote this drivel doesn't know what they're talking about!

Date: 2006-08-14 12:34 am (UTC)this administration has not presented a single piece of evidence that actually supports their assertions that the unconstitutional PATRIOT Act or the NSA surveilance programs have actually accomplished anything.
as for the Miami seven, hindsight shows they were just plain stupid.
beyond that for your "many attacks", NAME ONE.
seriously. no bullshit. name one. cite the web site with an official press release that demonstrates these were really islamic terrorists they caught and not just blindly applying "terrorism" to the list of charges for crimes that wouldn't have been called that in more reasonable times.
if you read some of the other editorials in the papers you might see a summary of how many of the "terrorist" charges being used against americans are for crimes that prior to 9/11 wouldn't have been called "terrorism", and thus don't count. this includes several incidents of high school "columbine" clones.
just because we haven't been attacked doesn't mean they actually tried and failed. maybe there haven't been any real coordinated attacks.
maybe, like WTC '93 and WTC '01, they are waiting for us to be in a transitional state between administrations, knowing that's a weak point in american intelligence coordination (which it is, made worse by Rice's blatant ignorance (and lying to the media about it) of Clark's warnings and efforts to help transfer al quaeda background in the months of the transition in '01).
as for "who wrote this drivel", it was the secretary general of interpol itself, who knows more about most things going on in this world than most CIA or NSA agents.
and certainly more than you do.
what's he's asking publically is that the FBI and other American and national agencies of other countries MAKE it their job to report arrest information and escapee incidents to Interpol so that Interpol can do its fucking job and HELP the national agencies catch them and give cross-boundary information (like swiss bank accounts and the like which they have access to and american enforcers don't).
just as DHS is SUPPOSED to get the federal agencies talking to each other (i'll give you a hint: they still don't and DHS is running out of money throwing shit to the technology wall on this...i know because i follow that side of IT very closely having been up for a job for one of their contractors and turned it down), Interpol is trying to get the nations of the world to remember they're there and are willing and able to HELP coordinate joint international efforts to track down terrorists that have a habit of crossing national borders like they were chicken wire.
i'm not going to listen to assertions that because X hasn't happened (yet) that means Y is working. logic and reason doesn't work that way, only blind political rhetoric which hurts this country and world FAR more than it helps.
Relax!

Look the rest up yourself, it'll save time. You wont find them all, they're not "sexy" or politically correct enough for the popular media, but there are enough (even though one should be plenty) to prove my point.
As for Secretary Noble, I've got to give you that one. I'm sure he knows much more than both of us about the subject. I wasn't referring to him. I know the way I typed my response makes it seem like I was and I apologize for that. Although, having been a "local officer" I still disagree with that part. I was aiming at the last paragraph of your original post.

Date: 2006-08-14 11:27 pm (UTC)in addition, so much for intelligence - 1) the whole Reid connection that dominates half that briefing was a non-starter. he was completely on his own, having only tenuous connections to other bombers by briefly attending the same mosque in london (which was also a hangout for several of the recent london arrestees). and 2) indonesia was the target of a bombing later that year, and another round 3 years later.

Date: 2006-08-15 02:27 am (UTC)I did indeed meet your original demand of "Name one". While you may continue to attempt to conditionalize and rationalize your way around the fact, it remains. Let's move on
