The science-blogging world is going a little nutso about the fact that Jay Leno has managed to book Ann Coulter (plugging her latest packet of total lies, deceits, and bullshit, "Godless") and George Carlin (just hanging around probably because either a new book or new HBO special is coming out soon) on the same show, tonite's in fact.  They're all expecting some major slap-down by Carlin to put her in her place, yada yada.

I'm thinking they likely won't be on screen at the same time.  It used to be how it was done back in the '60s and '70s, but even into Carson's last shows it was a rarety through the 80s and on, and Leno almost never does it.

That's not to say that Coulter doesn't deserve one or that Carlin isn't capable of doing it. However, for Carlin, its almost too easy.  If its not fun, he likely won't get involved.  On top of that, he's a comedian who carefully writes and rehearses his material.  He's rarely an improv "wit" in the same way that a Robin Williams is a "wit" capable of coming up with something reliably funny at any moment.

If I'm wrong, great, but I won't expect anything of tonite other than an extreme feeling of nausea and disgust while Coulter's on screen...

Carlin was funny, back in the day, but if they put him and Coulter on the same screen, his kneejerk will knock his mic loose, and no one will know what he says. He's been on Bill Mahr's show several times, and he's entirely uninteresting these days. He can't get past "George Bush let BinLadin bomb the trade centers and he knew about it in advance but he was so busy stealing the election to do anything about it" to even address the topic at hand.

Well, you were both wrong to an extent.

Carlin actually made a good show of his part... And didn't mention Bush, BinLadin, the election, or even Ann Coulter for that matter, and actually stayed relatively on topic (also made fun of himself because people were applauding because he was still alive at 69).

He made one good crack about never imagining being to the right of Ann Coulter. And spent the entire rest of the conversation visibly chewing his lower lip in an attempt to not start a riot.

Pooh. I was hoping for a catfight. *smirk*

I'm taping because that way I won't get too riled up at her bigotry comments and end up staying awake all night.

Sheesh... only decent comment he made was the one about never imagining he'd be to the right of Ann Coulter...

Although he did look like he was chewing his lower lip off in an effort to not start something. *sigh* too bad.
