Never mind that no one has ever made a coherent, much less compelling, argument for why allowing gays to get married will do anything whatsoever to damage heterosexual marriages. The anti-gay marriage position is not based on reason, it is based on bigotry. For all practical purposes, the opposition is a mob and you control mobs by appealing to their base emotions, by telling them who is to blame for the thing that outrages them. This playbook has been used time and time again throughout our history.

You know, I am analyzing the arguments against same-sex marriage for my thesis, and try as I may to keep my own bias out of it I really am coming to the same conclusion.

Every time I see someone state "It's Common Sense" I imediatly am reminded of the work of George Lakoff (sp?) where he says that if anyone declairs something as "common sense" that it should send up a red flag that there is something culturally ingrained here.

I'm trying so very hard to find an argument against-same sex marriage that doesn't have a major fallacy to it's logic and I just can't. I CAN find arguments against marriage as a state sponsered institution for ALL regardless of sexuality, but that isn't really the same thing now, is it?

The problem with the idea of victory for the good guys being "inevitable" is a recurring one. They, the bad guys, treat this as a war. They have an organization. They raise money, they take action, they are not just willing, but happy to hurt people in their cause. We just try to do the right thing when presented with the opportunity to do so, and don't actually fight until backed against the wall. We joke about the "gay agenda" they claim in rhetoric, and the jokes are true, there is no gay aganda. On the other hand, the anti-gay agenda is real, they have meetings, they develop strategy and tactics. I don't see how any group can win any conflict against an organized, well funded, ruthless enemy, just by being good people.
