Hanging @ the Honda dealership...my car's wonderful little "check engine" light came on...fortunately, it got here without stalling, but we'll see how bad it is in a few...
The "Check Engine" light is one of the stupidest features in automotive technology -- all it tells you is that something, somewhere, is terribly (and expensively) wrong with your engine. They might as well rename it "Replace Engine."
depends on the car - my parents 84 toyota minivan lasted for a few days just on the battery (but with the check-engine light on) before it finally gave out...halfway between here and pennsic (not a good week).
My check engine light has been on for about a year now. It's an oxygen sensor, that I haven't had time to replace yet. It goes out from time to time, but no problems other than wasting a few electrons to keep it lit.
My ex- from college, when hers went off on her VW (in those days, it automatically went off every 30K miles regardless of engine state just to force you to do the maintenance), she would tell her passengers that oxygen masks were about to drop from the ceiling any minute now...
