Apr. 25th, 2006 05:42 pmThe ancient greeks may have been smarter than us. Their original calendar was a 10 month lunar calendar at 30/31 days a month, leaving 61 days of winter not actually on the calendar.
Imaging that, not having to pay the rent or mortgage for 60 days! Gosh them greeks was smart.
(I was looking this up in trying to see the point where the Roman calendar names got offset by 2 - the names for months 9,10,11,12 are based on the numbers for 7,8,9,10. The romans added january and february at the end, but Julius Caesar reoriented them when he fixed things in 46 BC and wev'e been stuck with them ever since.)
